Horde Survival Games: How to Build a Strong Run

By ForgeFlow Labs · Published October 28, 2026 · 3 min read

In a horde or wave survival game, you are always outnumbered, and the game is about staying alive and getting stronger as the numbers grow. The theme changes, from monsters to geometry, but the habits that help are the same. Here are the ones that matter most.

Movement is your first defence

Keep moving. Standing still lets groups of enemies surround you. Move in wide arcs so that enemies chase you in a line instead of cutting you off.

Read the warnings

Strong attacks are usually telegraphed: a marker on the ground, a wind-up animation or a sound. The skill is in recognising the signal and moving before the hit, not after. Learn each warning once and it becomes automatic.

Upgrades

  • Choose upgrades that work together. A few that support each other beat many that do not.
  • Take defence early. A run that survives longer sees more upgrades.
  • Use rerolls if you have them. A hand of upgrades that does not fit your build is worth replacing.
  • Match your choices to your character. Each one has a different style, so pick upgrades that make what it does well even better.

Dashes and cooldowns

An escape ability is only useful when it is ready. Do not spend your dash on a small danger and then face a large one without it. Treat cooldowns as a resource.

Chains and multipliers

Score multipliers reward unbroken sequences. In a game with a combo meter, a long chain is worth far more than the same number of hits spread out, so play to keep the chain alive.

Thinking about a build

Imagine you are offered three upgrades. One raises damage, one adds a second attack and one improves your defence. The best choice depends on what your run is missing. If you are being overwhelmed, take the defence. If you are strong but slow at clearing enemies, take the damage. If your current attack has a clear weakness, such as a short range, take the upgrade that covers it.

Good players make this choice by asking what will kill them next, not what looks strongest in isolation.

Games to try

BLOCKTOOTH is an isometric game where you grow by eating the city and choose mutation cards as you level. Thronedrift is a top-down arena with three classes and combo multipliers up to 32x. Vector Storm is a neon twin-stick shooter where you kite swarms of vector shapes. Ember Sanctum is an isometric arena with named bosses and telegraphed signature attacks.

Common questions

Should I fight or run?
Both. Moving while you fight is the basic skill, and retreating to reset the crowd is often better than standing your ground.
How do I learn boss attacks?
Watch the first wind-up and note what the warning looks like. Bosses repeat their moves, so your second attempt is much easier than your first.
Is it worth rerolling upgrades?
Usually, when none of the offered cards fit what you already have. A reroll is cheaper than a card you do not need.
What makes a run end early?
Standing still, using the escape ability on a small threat, and ignoring warnings are the most common causes.
