Mahjong Solitaire: How Matching Works and Tips to Clear the Board
By ForgeFlow Labs · Published October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Mahjong solitaire is a quiet matching puzzle played with mahjong tiles. It is easy to learn and surprisingly easy to get stuck in, because the order in which you remove tiles matters. This guide explains the rules and gives you habits that make a clear board much more likely.
The layout and the tiles
A full set has 144 tiles. They are stacked into a layout, most commonly the classic turtle. The tiles include three suits (circles, bamboo and characters), the winds, the dragons, and the flowers and seasons.
What makes a tile free
You can only remove a tile that is free. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is open. A tile that is covered, or hemmed in on both sides, cannot be selected yet.
How tiles match
You remove tiles in pairs. Two free tiles match when they are identical, with one exception: any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any other season, even though their pictures differ.
Tips for clearing the board
- Work on the tall stacks first. Removing the tiles that cover others frees more pairs than picking at the edges.
- Before you remove a pair, count the copies. There are four of most tiles. If two are free and two are buried, take the pair that frees the most.
- Look at the ends of long rows. The end tiles are often what is holding the rest of the row hostage.
- Do not remove a pair just because you can. Ask which tiles it frees, and whether it buries something else.
- Use the hint and the shuffle when you are truly stuck. They exist to keep the game enjoyable.
Reading the layout
Before your first move, look at the whole turtle. The tall central stacks hold many tiles that are covered by others, and the long rows on each side are held in place by their end tiles. A good first move opens as many new free tiles as possible. A bad first move removes a pair that was not blocking anything.
As you play, keep asking which tiles are stuck. A tile that is covered and also hemmed in on both sides will stay stuck until both the tile above it and one neighbour are gone.
A solvable deal
On ForgeFlow Games every deal is generated so that it can be solved, so if you get stuck, an earlier decision was the cause. Hints are available with H, and S reshuffles the remaining tiles into a new solvable layout.
Common questions
- Why do flowers and seasons match even when they look different?
- By tradition there are only single copies of each flower and season, so any flower pairs with any other flower and any season with any other season.
- Is there a timer?
- Not in our version. You can take as long as you like.
- What should I do if I think no moves are left?
- Use the hint to check, then shuffle. The shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles into a layout that can still be solved.
- Is every game winnable?
- On ForgeFlow Games every deal is generated so that it can be solved. If you get stuck, an earlier choice was usually the cause.
