Tower Defense Basics: Economy, Chokepoints and Counters

Tower defense games give you a limited budget and an unlimited supply of enemies. Winning comes from deciding where to spend, and that is easier when you know what to look for. This guide covers the principles that apply to nearly every game of the type.
Economy first
Most of these games pay you for defeating enemies and for finishing waves, so the early game is about building a defence that holds while the economy grows. Spend on what you need for the next wave, but avoid wasting funds on duplicates before you have covered the basics.
Where to build
- Place towers beside bends in the path. The enemies stay in range longer when the path turns toward the tower.
- Cover several parts of the path, not one spot. Enemies that survive the first tower should meet a second.
- Leave space for upgrades and for new towers when the game shows you a new enemy type.
Know your enemy types
Many games include armoured enemies, flying enemies, shielded or warded enemies and enemies that regenerate. Each of them is a reason to have more than one tower type. Read the wave information before you start the wave and check that your defence can answer what is coming.
Upgrade or add?
An upgrade is usually a more efficient way to add power than a new tower when your tower is already well placed. A new tower is better when you need coverage somewhere new or a different damage type. The right choice depends on what is breaking through.
Boss waves
Bosses often summon more enemies, raise shields or change phase during the fight. Keep some funds in reserve and a mix of single-target and area damage so that you can respond.
Reading a wave before it starts
Many tower defense games show you what is in the next wave. Treat that as a short checklist. Count the number of enemies and note any special types: fast, armoured, flying, shielded or regenerating. Then look at your defence and ask whether it covers each type. If a flying wave is coming and none of your towers can hit flying enemies, you want to fix that before you press start, not after.
Games to try
Bastion Realms is a 45-level campaign across five realms with eight tower types. Siegeheart puts the keep at the centre of the map with enemies coming from every edge. Ashwall Nights combines town building by day with hero combat at night.
Common questions
- Is it better to upgrade or to build more towers?
- If the tower is well placed, an upgrade is usually the more efficient use of funds. If you need coverage in a new spot or a different damage type, build a new tower.
- What if an enemy keeps leaking through?
- Find where it gets through and place a tower beside that part of the path. Then check whether you have a tower type that is effective against that enemy.
- Is selling a tower a mistake?
- No. Selling and rebuilding is part of the game, and it is often the right call when a wave shows you that your layout does not fit.
- How do I prepare for a boss?
- Keep funds in reserve and a mix of single-target and area damage. Bosses change during the fight, so you may need to adapt.
